Summertime is festival time. In Germany, there are hundreds of music festivals and interesting events going on - especially between May and September. There’s something to suit every taste from rock & pop, electro, hip hop, heavy metal to classical and jazz.
We’d like to share our top 20 music festivals for 2017. An added bonus is that many of the festivals take place in beautiful locations alongside lakes, rivers or even by the sea.
Facilities are available at most of the locations, such as tent hire or spaces for caravans. Some locations can easily be reached by train from the nearest airport. Other places are a little more off the beaten track and are more accessible by car, giving you the perfect opportunity to discover more of Germany’s stunning countryside.
Our Top 20 music festivals in Germany
Rock am Ring Nürburgring & Rock im Park Nuremberg 02.06.17 – 04.06.17
This legendary rock festival has something for everyone with its eclectic mix of Rock, Electro and Hip-Hop. Camping and spaces for caravans are available on-site. It’s also the perfect location to explore the Eifel and Rhineland-Palatinate region.
World Club Dome Frankfurt am Main 02.06.2017 – 04.06.2017
World Club Dome is one of the largest electronic music festivals in Germany. This two-day event transforms Frankfurt’s Commerzbank Arena into a clubbers paradise.
Mayfeld Derby, Mannheim 16.06.17 – 18.06.17
Indie music fans will love the Maifeld Derby Festival. This two-day event takes place in a horse racing stadium and combines many styles of music - including Hip-Hop, Electronic and Rock.
Ruhr in Love, Oberhausen 01.07.2017
Electronic music fans will love this one-day event. Held on the site of an old coal mine, festival-goers can enjoy a mix of House, Techno, Trance and Hardcore from midday until 10pm. You can be sure the DJs will keep the party going until the end of the day!
Bochum Total 06.07.2017 – 09.07.2017
Bochum Total is Europe’s largest music festival, which attracts around a million visitors each year. Over 70 national and international musicians perform on four stages. There are a good choice of pubs and restaurants located in the nearby town of Bochum.
Airbeat One in Neustadt-Glewe 13.07.17 – 16.07.17
Airbeat One is one of Germany’s major events for electronic music. Located around two hours from Hamburg and Berlin, the festival attracts over 40,000 visitors each year.
Rocken am Brocken Elend 03.08.2017 – 05.08.2017
Wacken Open Air 03.08.17 – 05.08.17
This annual open-air festival is the event for heavy metal and hard rock fans in Europe. It takes place in the village of Wacken, in the Schleswig-Holstein region and attracts over 100,000 visitors each year. Situated only an hour’s drive from Hamburg, it makes it ideally located to discover the surrounding area and the seaside town of Büsum.
Dockville, Hamburg Wilhelmsburg 18.08.17 – 20.08.17
This music and art festival takes place every summer on the island of Wilhelmsburg – close to Hamburg’s harbour. Music fans can enjoy a variety of genres, including Electro, Hip-Hop, Indie, Rock and Punk. On-site camping is available from 2pm on 17th August.
