History of the Christmas market14th November 2016
I always enjoy spending quality time with my friends – whether it’s a girlie night out, a cultural outing, an exhibition or going to a concert. I love being able to put the world to rights, exchanging tips and advice or just being able to chat about the ups and downs of our relationships!
My ideal ‘mates’ day is a spa day!
Did you know that day spas are very popular in Germany? In the UK day spas tend to be reserved for hotels and often don’t open up their facilities to external guests. Whereas, in Germany, you will find an abundance of day spas solely for the purpose of relaxing – saunas, steam baths, swimming pools and treatment rooms. When I was still living in Germany, there was nothing I enjoyed more than treating myself to a day spa with my friends. Although, admittedly, I probably didn’t appreciate it at the time as much as I do now I’m a mum! These hours of not being in ‘mum mode’ are very special to me. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love my son and enjoy his company immensely, but I do need space to be able to recharge my batteries. The perfect place to treat myself to that kind of time-out is a day spa where I relax in a steam sauna, inhaling the eucalyptus scents, enjoying a back, neck and shoulder massage or just sleeping, reading or chilling in the calming relaxation areas.
On one of my frequent visits back to my home country, I spent a couple of hours with a friend in the glamorous Momentum Spa in Düsseldorf. It is currently 35€ for two hours – more expensive than other day spas – but I must admit, it felt very special indeed! The atmosphere is calm, the interior design is wonderfully elegant and the ambience is based on a clear and holistic concept, which balances the mind, body and soul.

It feels like being on holiday for a day
There are also many larger day spas spread out all over the country. Another one of my favourites is the Wellneuss Spa, which is also close to Düsseldorf. It is more spacious and is currently 31€ for a day ticket – not as pricey as the Momentum Spa. I like the outdoor area with its natural lake and the sun loungers, which are located in the beautiful park. The variety of saunas on offer as well as the treatment packages make it an experience not to be missed.

Treat yourself to a short break plus some me time
Why not think about including some me time in a day spa when on a short break – maybe to the North Rhine-Westphalian cities like Cologne, Düsseldorf, Münster or Essen? You could grab a day of pure indulgence in between visiting all those Christmas markets! I know, for me, that would be the perfect time-out experience!
